Derek Lomas, PhD, is a designer and cognitive scientist. As an assistant professor at the Delft Institute for Positive Design, he focuses on AI for Wellbeing. His academic work focuses on the use of online experiments to test theories of motivation and learning.  His design practice, Playpower Labs Inc (playpowerlabs.com), has produced over 40 different games for learning and assessment and advises large curriculum companies on the data-informed design of assessment and instruction. He is formerly a Design Fellow and Post Doc at the Design Lab at UC San Diego, mentored by Don Norman. He received his PhD in Human Computer Interaction from Carnegie Mellon School of Computer Science, advised by Ken Koedinger and Jodi Forlizzi, with certification in the Program for Interdisciplinary Educational Research. He received his MFA in Visual Arts from UC San Diego and a BA in Cognitive Science from Yale University.
